Don’t even try it without an HVAC professional

I tend to be one of those people who like to do things on their own.

  • My parents were very self sufficient and raised me to be that way too.

However, they also always reminded me that there comes a time when you need to ask for help. My mom and dad realized that relying on experts was a responsible thing to do in certain instances. I wish I had remembered that when I tried to tackle HVAC equipment problem. Instead, I made a cardinal error with trying to diagnose and then fix my HVAC unit. It started when I came home late one evening to find the house hot. It was strange because the heat pump was running when I passed it on my way to the front door. I reached up and felt the air coming from the ductwork and there was no HVAC cooling happening. Initially, I thought maybe the thermostat got accidentally set to the fan only setting. But when I checked it, the thermostat was right where it was supposed to be. That’s when I should have simply picked up the phone and called the HVAC professionals. But I went online to diagnose the problem instead. And all the problems ensued. It appeared to me that the heat pump simply was in need of an HVAC refrigerant recharge and they sold those kits at the hardware store. Of course, I diagnosed an HVAC problem while having no clue or training when it came to heating and cooling. So that turned out not to be the problem and I ended up rupturing the compressor. Wish I’d just called the HVAC professionals from the beginning.
